ARAGON BALLROOM, Chicago – Last Night The Ireland Rockers Invaded Chicago! I know what you are thinking, U2. But no! They are an amazing band but so is another band from Ireland. They go by the initials SP. Still mystified? If so, the name is Snow Patrol.
For those of you fast asleep by 8:30 p.m. then you missed an amazing sold out performance of Snow Patrol at the Aragon Ballroom.
The evening began with a hard-hitting performance of Silversun Pickups and followed by the Chicago Rockers, OK Go.
After OK Go exited stage left the anticipation and excitement had started to sink in to everyone’s thoughts.
All of a sudden the lights dimmed and red-blinking lights started to dominate the background of the stage. As the lights continued to increase in numbers, Snow Patrol entered stage right to a roaring audience ovation.
The first song Snow Patrol played was their hit song “Spitting Games” from the album Final Straw.
The entire evening was enfolding like a storybook as Snow Patrol belted out hit songs after hit songs and ovation after ovation. Songs like “Chocolate” from Final Straw to “Chasing Cars” from Eyes Open.
For those of you watching American Idol this season, you missed one of the best amateur performances by an audience member and it was not the infamous Sanjaya Malakar.
Her name was Kelly and she sang a duet with Gary Lightbody “Set The Fire to The Third Bar” from the album Eyes Open. Originally, the duet was recorded with Martha Wainwright. After the song concluded, Gary said, “she was one of the best that we had so far.” After she exited the stage there was a roaring audience ovation. After the roaring audience ovation I glanced into the audience and saw some Irish pride. A woman on the main floor was waving an Ireland flag.
Between the roaring audience ovations and the Irish pride the evening peaked even further when Gary stood on the drums playing guitar on “Ways & Means” from the album Final Straw and came to a final roaring conclusion with “Hands Open” from the album Eyes Open.
After the roaring conclusion, the gentlemen took their bow and the audience bursted with the loudest ovation of the evening. The ovation was so loud it must have been heard from every pedestrian passing by the ballroom.
The enthusiasm, that evening, told the story! From the audience member’s duet to Gary standing on the drums to the final roaring ovation, what an amazing performance from Snow Patrol! I would encourage everyone to go see Snow Patrol because you will not be disappointed.
