“Our philosophy at It Takes a Community Foundation is that it takes a community to sustain a community,” says Lewis. “With diminishing public services and towns in crisis, we are looking for ways to support local groups that strengthen, engage and enrich the communities near our home in western Massachusetts. The R.H. Conwell Community Education Center is certainly one of them. We fought against the school’s closing two years ago, when the state’s misappropriation of funds would have forced the kids from Worthington and the surrounding areas to bus one hour each way to school and back. The community pulled together to reopen the school but it takes donations, corporate sponsors, grants and multiple fundraisers such as this one to keep the doors open for these kids.”

About R.H. Conwell Community Education Center:
R.H. Conwell Community Education Center (501c3 non-profit private school) endeavors to be responsive to the needs of the community.  “No Worthington child will be turned away for financial reasons” is another key component of the philosophy at Conwell. It is a core belief at Conwell that families with limited resources should not be excluded from receiving their education and learning in a local school setting. Children who emerge from Conwell will possess the knowledge, skills, and principles to be self-motivated, life-long learners. The children will have received instruction in curriculum following the Massachusetts frameworks and will easily enter private or public school with not only the skills and knowledge expected of them, but we are convinced they will have developed real thoughtfulness about the world around them.  Family and community involvement, character development, social and emotional health, fitness and wellness, and an awareness of the environment are as core components of our vision at Conwell.
